On Friday, 11th April, there was a S-League soccer match. A band member who was there accidentally bump into his school teacher. Since tomorrow is the SYF display band competition, his teacher brought up the topic of the school band.
Teacher: “I suppose tomorrow’s the day right? Tell me kid, what’s your feeling now?”
Band Member: “Yes Sir, tomorrow’s the day. I feel slightly nervous but most importantly, I feel really honoured and proud to participate in it”
Teacher: “What’s your band aiming for? Another gold perhaps?”
Band Member: “Of course not Sir. We’ll be aiming the best that we can achieve.”
Teacher: “Tell me kid, how best is best?”
Band Member: “Sir, the best can never be describe. The show you’ve seen during our band practices or even sport’s day can never be compare to the show we’re performing tomorrow.”
Teacher: “ I see kid. In that case, are you telling me you wanta win a gold with honours? Hmmm, is it possible? After all why would you be aiming something that you know it’s kinda impossible. There are other bands too kid.”
Band Member: “It’s possible Sir. You haven’t seen us perform our best yet. By all means Sir, Gold with honours doesn’t only apply to the show itself. Us band members have already gotten the award for good teamwork and strong bonding. Furthermore, it doesn’t matter if we get that award or not, what matter most is that us band members are given the chance to perform together and that is even more priceless than a gold with honours. Our sweat, tears and hard work can never be compared.”
Teacher: “You sounded pretty convincing. In fact, what you’ve said is more or less true. However I wanta know if you’re in it to win it. I wanta know if you’re gonna give your best tomorrow. Action speaks louder than words. I wanta see you sweating, performing you best tomorrow.”
Band Member: “I will. Sir, look at that field. A field is a place where us band members strive each day to do our very best, to get our shoes dirty. The field has already tasted the sweat that drop on it every time we practiced. Indeed action speaks louder than words. See me do my very best”
Teacher: “I will. So, kid, now I ask you – are you sure?”
